Experience/Background:
While a freshman in college my fraternity chose me
to represent them in the Spring Games bicycle race, and I blew away the
limited competition riding a Schwinn Phantom. The following year they
made it a relay, and we blew away the competition. They quit having it
after that.
41 years later my wife gave me a bicycle for
Christmas, to regenerate my bad knees and to bond with a couple of
casual-riding friends. It was like new life given. Several months later
I joined and began doing the long Saturday rides with the Memphis
Hightailers, building a strong riding base, although at the time I had
no understanding of such things. A year later I clamped on aero bars
and tried my hand at the State Championship Time Trial, surprising
myself with the results.
Then I started taking it seriously, got
a coach, joined Back Yard Burger, and had more fun than I could
possibly have imagined. Well, except for the bitter taste of getting my
butt kicked by numerous riders around town, which only served as
inspiration to train harder. I am indebted to them and the many others
who have helped me become a better rider and racer.
My wife
laments that through a well conceived and generous Christmas gift she
has created a monster. Now my wood working shop sets idle, her
"Honey-Do List" only gets longer, water bottles clutter her counters,
damp clothes drape the bathroom, bicycles and wheels decorate the
garage, and social priorities have changed as life seems to revolve
around the next race. But I know she really approves; after my last
purchase, she didn`t even ask how much it cost.
