Moderate-Hard
(due to distance) / 60- 80 miles / Avg. Speed 17-19
The
Skinny: The other Saturday morning option is another
Memphis road riding tradition. It features long mileage and epic routes
through the beautiful West Tennessee countryside. This ride is a
perfect choice for endurance, base or recovery work. The pace is slower
and consistent for the duration. There will be occasional moments of
speed accelerations, but the group generally stays together and does a
good job of sweeping up anyone who may fall off the back. There is
usually a shorter distance turn off option for a 45-50 mile route for
anyone who has to get back. Ride leaders will announce it. After the
traditional departure route down Brunswick, through Davies Plantation
and out Raleigh-Arlington Road, the course for the day is the
discretion of the ride leader and usually never goes the same way
twice. Roll out is 7am Saturday morning from the parking lot of R.B.’s Cyclery, 8500 Wolf Lake Drive.
Departure time switches to 8am during the off season.
Dangers:
All the traditional West Tennessee road riding hazards apply; holes,
debris, rabid drivers, gravel and dogs. For some reason, possibly
because of the slower pace or the more relaxed attitude of this ride
some at the front get careless about warning those behind of trouble
spots. Stay alert and call out the hazards.
Note to New Riders:
This is an excellent opportunity to gain fitness and friends. Basic
pack riding skills and the ability for you and your bike to handle 3-4
hours in the saddle is all that is required. Depending on the season
prepare for the weather. Fluids, food and sunscreen for the summer and
proper winter gear for the off season. Final note: Whatever you do,
don’t piss off Pam and you will be fine.
